Melbourne's Space Roo

If you happen to be flying over a Melbourne suburb in the near future and you see a giant white kangaroo, don’t be alarmed. It’s science.

The 32-metre by 18-metre cardboard ’roo is part of an experiment to measure albedo, the amount of light reflected back into space as part of a global climate change experiment.

The American space agency NASA will use four satellites that regularly sweep through Australian skies to photograph the kangaroo on Tuesday morning at Monash University's Clayton campus.

The satellites will measure how much of the sun's warmth would be lost if the planet were covered in thick white cloud, one climate change scenario. The pictures will be compared with satellite photos taken a year ago.

Cherry Bar @ Only Melbourne

Contrary to news reports, the Cherry Bar in AC/DC Lane was not destroyed by fire on June 5, 2008. The bars owner confirmed on ABC radio that the basement bar suffered severe water damage from a fire that centred mainly in the top floor and roof.

Optimistically, he hoped the bar would be back open for business Friday week coincidently Friday 13th, 2008. We wish Cherry Bar good luck.

Melbourne's Ugly Onion? | Typophile

It appears that the “brand” of Melbourne has been redesigned by Cato Purnell Parnters. I have to admit I’m certainly surprised with the direction they’ve taken with this. Melbourne is a very modern, colourful and culturally vibrant city… and they’ve gone with cool tones of blue and smooshed Helvetica bold?

The “onion” analogy rings true. Melbourne is indeed a multi-layered city, you discover something new and exciting everyday, but is the turning pages design effective at communicating this? I think blue is certainly a surprising choice. Is it vibrant enough for Melbourne?

DADA Supporters and Friends | Darebin Appropriate Development Association

DADA Darebin Appropriate Development Association is a group of concerned Darebin residents who feel that without proper checks and balances Darebin will lose it's eclectic soul.

DADA is not against development however it is against INAPPROPRIATE development.

Darebin has its own unique eclectic mix and vibe and this could be lost. High rise development has its place in society and that is what Docklands is all about. The exisiting infrustructure is already at bursting point and to add extra pressure on this through inappropriate development makes the problem worse for everyone.

Visit to Melbourne

So, we flew into Melbourne on wednesday 8th November at about 7 AM local time. The airport was surprisingly small but they did come round with a sniffer dog to check everyone's bags for dodgy disease carrying food.

Origin of Football

In Victoria, Australia, Indigenous Australians played a game called Marn Grook. It is widely believed that Marn Grook had an influence on the development of Australian Rules Football.

Australian Rules is sometimes said to be the first form of football to be codified but — as was the case in all kinds of football at the time, there was no official body supporting the rules — and play varied from one club to another.
